What is Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is the largest free encyclopedia in the world – and the playing field for Wiki Wars.

The Free Encyclopedia

Wikipedia was founded on January 15, 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. The name combines the Hawaiian word "wiki" (quick) with "encyclopedia". Today, Wikipedia is one of the most visited websites in the world – with over 60 million articles in more than 300 languages.

Wikipedia fact: The average distance between two random Wikipedia articles is only about 4 clicks.

How Does Wikipedia Work?

Anyone can write and edit Wikipedia articles – for free, without registration. The content is maintained and reviewed by a worldwide community of volunteer authors. Wikipedia is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization.

Wikipedia by the Numbers

The English Wikipedia alone contains over 6.7 million articles. Thousands of new articles are added every day. Over 280,000 active authors worldwide contribute to Wikipedia. The printed version of the English Wikipedia would fill over 2,000 volumes.

Wikipedia as a Playing Field

No other medium connects knowledge as densely as Wikipedia. Every article links to dozens of others – making Wikipedia the perfect maze for Wiki Wars. From the article about "Beethoven" to the article about "Mars" in just a few clicks? Sounds crazy – but it's possible.
