History of Wiki Games

From student parties to the mobile app – the journey of the Wikipedia racing game.

The Beginnings (2003–2007)

As soon as Wikipedia was large enough, students discovered the potential of the endless links as a playing field. At universities in the USA and Europe, the "Wikipedia Game" emerged as an unofficial party and learning game. Two players, one start, one goal – who gets there faster?

Wikispeedia (2007–2012)

In 2007, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University developed the game "Wikispeedia" as a scientific experiment. The goal was to understand how people navigate through information networks. The data from the game was used for academic papers on human navigation behavior and knowledge structures.

Digital Variants (2010–2020)

With the rise of smartphones, the first browser games and later mobile apps emerged. "The Wiki Game" as a web version enjoyed great popularity. Various developers experimented with time limits, click restrictions and multiplayer modes.

Wiki Wars – The App (2021–Today)

Wiki Wars was developed by Palmomedia and brings the classic Wiki Race experience fully to the smartphone. With features like multiplayer codes, weekly challenges, statistics and push notifications, Wiki Wars sets new standards for the genre. The app is available free for iOS and Android.
